El Paso Water Utilities (EPWU) supplies the majority (about 90%) of all the municipal tap water in El Paso County. The EPWU relies on surface water and groundwater for their municipal water supply. Surface water is withdrawn from the Rio Grande and groundwater is pumped from the Mesilla Bolson and the Hueco Bolson aquifers - basins underlying portions of New Mexico, Texas and Chihuahua. Water cloudiness and brown discoloration has been reported and drives some residents to turn to buying bottled water. High levels of arsenic have been found in small communities surrounding the city of El Paso, such as Tornillo, TX. Arsenic is an odorless and tasteless semi-metal found in rocks and soil that can increase people’s risk to cancer and can cause damage to skin and blood circulation. In recent years, radioactive elements and arsenic have exceeded health guidelines.
